Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
