The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
